BASL AWARDS

Criteria for BASL Awards

 

1. BASL Case Presentation Award (BASL Winter Meeting)

  • 1 award of  € 250
  • The best clinical  case presentation during the BASL Winter meeting
  • For the first author who presents her/his case her/himself  
  • No age restriction
  • Registered member of the BASL at the moment of presentation
  • Jury: the public by interactive voting system at the end of the meeting
  • The award is offered at the end of the Winter Meeting.

 

2. BASL Young investigator Awards (BASL Spring Meeting, Thursday morning at the Belgian Week of Gastroenterology)

  • 2 awards of  € 500 each: 1 for the best clinical presentation  and 1 for the best basic presentation (poster abstracts are not considered for the award).
  • For the first author under the age of 40 and registered member of the BASL at the moment of presentation
  • Jury: vote on anonymous abstracts (score from 1 to 5) by all members of the BASL Steering Committee at submission (50% of the points) and by 3 independent reviewers appointed by the BASL President at the presentation during the meeting (e.g. state of the  art lecturers) (50% of the points)
  • The awards are offered at the end of the BASL Spring Meeting on Thursday.
  • The award is offered to the prize winner only if he is present (not given to a representative)

 

3. MSD Schering Plough Awards

  • 2 awards of € 1.250 euros: 1 for the best clinical  publication and 1 for the best basic  publication in the field of Hepatology during the preceding year.
  • For the first author
  • The author should be registered member of the BASL at submission
  • Papers published the year before the year of the BASL Winter meeting
  • Deadline for application: the papers (PDF file of the full paper + mentioning the impact factor) are to be sent to the secretary of the BASL before the 1st of November .
  • Anonymous vote with a score from 1 to 5.
  • Jury: all members of the steering committee of the BASL + a medical doctor coming from the Schering Plough company.
  • The awards are given after the morning session of the BASL Winter Meeting.
  • The awards are offered to the prize winners only if they are present (not given to a representative)

 

4. BASL research grant

  • Objective: to support each year 2 original research projects in the field of Hepatology (basic and/or clinical)
  • Amount: € 2.500 each
  • Application deadline: October 1st of each year
  • Conditions:
    1. The work must be performed at a Belgian institution (hospital or university)
    2. The research proposal must be written in English
    3. The applicant should be holder of a master degree in medicine or in biomedical sciences
    4. The applicant must not be older than 45 years when applying for the grant
    5. The applicant must be registered member of the BASL at application
    6. The grant money is divided into two parts of € 1.250 each, the second part being awarded only under the conditions mentioned in point 7.
    7. The grant holder commits himself to present the results of his work at the BASL Winter Meeting within 2 years after having received the first part of the grant money. Passing this delay or refusing to present the results of the work will automatically suspend the payment of the second part of the grant money.
    8. The grants will be awarded during the annual BASL Winter Meeting by the President of the BASL. The presence of the grant winners at the BASL Winter Meeting is required to receive the grant. The non compliance with this condition will result in the loss of the grant.
  • Jury: The jury is composed of the members of the BASL Steering Committee and 1 external reviewer previously appointed by the steering committee. Each project is scored from 1 to 5 points by all members of the steering committee and by the external reviewer. The average score of the steering committee members accounts for 75% and the score of the external reviewer for 25% of the final score. If the jury decides that none of the projects reaches a sufficient scientific level, the grants will not be awarded.
  • Documents to be submitted:
    • summary of the applicant’s (or his research team’s) previous work and publications in relationship to the research proposal (max. 1 page, style Times New Roman or Arial, size 12, single spaced)
    • an out-line of the research proposal (max. 2 pages, style Times New Roman or Arial, size 12, single spaced)
    • the applicant’s CV
    • a complete list of the applicant’s publications
    • These documents should be sent to the current BASL secretary by e-mail (office@basl.be)(available on the BASL website: www.basl.be).
